The letters, illustrated by Norman Lindsay (including 40 drawings), was published to much acclaim in Sydney first in the Bulletin (1951-1952) & then as a collection by Angus and Robertson in 1953, and In 1986 a full-colour illustrated version appeared. Thomas Boyce in England) & Amy (who in 1855 married Thomas Sloman of Bathurst), from the time Biddulph left England, her own voyage out to Australia & then while she stayed with Biddulph at Appin and then at Bulli Mountain (Illawarra escarpment) in the 1850’s & later in Queensland. Illustrated Lettersīefore her marriage in 1866, Rachel wrote a series of letters to her sister Etta (married Rev. Rachel revelled in station life and the close family circle, the wild flowers and 'beautiful' scenery, the joys of horse riding, walking with her dogs, and the poddy lambs. Rachel lived with her sister Amelia in Bathurst through to September 1862, after which she and her sister Annie travelled to Queensland to live with Biddulph on his run at Exmoor, on the Bowen River near Port Denison in the South Kennedy district. In 1861 she returned to Australia in the Great Britain Homesick, Rachel returned to England in the Star of Peace and lived mainly with the Boyces. Rachel stayed with Biddulph at Appin and then at Bulli Mountain (Illawarra escarpment) in the 1850’s In 1854, Rachel and her sister Amy (Amelia) arrived aboard the Calcutta accompanied by their cousin Thomas Tregenna Biddulph in Australia to join her brother, Biddulph, and sister, Annie.

Several years later, Biddulph and Annie emigrated to Australia, arriving in 1853. (They stayed with their Biddulph cousins near Taunton after the death of the Rev Charles W Henning following the collapse of the Henning bank and the loss of their home Poxwell Manor.) Her mother's death in 1845 left Rachel responsible for her three sisters and only brother, Biddulph. Rachel was born b 29 April 1826 at Bristol, Gloustershire, England Rachel Biddulph Henning was the eldest child of Charles Henning and Rachel Biddulph, and the sister of Edmund Biddulph (known as Biddulph) Henning, Rachel Biddulph Henning Taylor, Annie Shrapnel Henning Hedgeland, & Amelia (Amy) Henning.
